Nearly three years after amendments to the Tobacco Hazards Prevention Act took effect, authorities across Taiwan have issued a total of $880 million NT in fines.
The Health Promotion Administration say the fines came after hundreds of thousands of inspections of e-cigarettes and unauthorized heated tobacco products online and in-person.
As the new school semester begins, the H-P-A is emphasizing that tobacco prevention efforts must take root on campuses to prevent adolescents from exposure that could affect brain development.
Health officials remind people of the danger of e-cigarettes, which remain illegal in Taiwan, saying that they often contain various chemical substances that maybe carcinogenic.
As for heated tobacco products and their devices, they must pass a health risk assessment review before they are allowed to be manufactured or imported.
