Kim opens North Korea party congress, claims economic gains

North Korean leader Kim Jong Un opened the Ninth Party Congress, North
Korea's biggest political meeting held every five years.

State media says Kim claimed the country met major economic goals and
overcame stagnation over the past five years.

Kim said the period brought gains in politics, defense, culture, and
diplomacy, and stronger self-reliance.

He did not mention relations with the United States or South Korea, and he
did not refer to nuclear weapons.

KCNA says party members submitted new goals and plans for the next five years
at the meeting.

Analysts are watching for possible leadership changes, including whether Kim
takes the title of president and whether his daughter Ju Ae appears.

Outside observers also expect displays of military capability during the
congress period, possibly including a parade.
