Child dead after boat capsizing in Hualien

A boy has died after a boat he was riding in capsized yesterday.

The 9 year old was riding a swan pedal boat at Liyu Lake Scenic Area in
Hualien.

He was among a group of family members who arrived in the area around 2pm.

The boy was riding a boat with his parents and other family members when it
capsized about 20 meters from shore.

Nearby visitors were able to rescue the four adults, but the child was only
later pulled out of the water by a bystander.

Witnesses say the boy was trapped under the boat for several minutes and
showed no signs of a heartbeat.

CPR was performed until emergency personnel arrived but the boy was later
pronounced dead at the hospital.

Officials say the cause of the incident remains under investigation.
