Portugal moves to require parental consent for teens to use social media

Portugal's parliament approved a bill on Thursday that would require parental consent for 13 to 16 year olds to access social media.
The draft law is backed by the ruling Social Democratic Party, which says it is needed to protect children from bullying, harmful content, and predators.
Parents would use a public Digital Mobile Key system to give consent, and tech firms would have to add age checks linked to it.
The plan also aims to better enforce an existing ban on social media access for children under 13.
The bill passed its first reading by 148 to 69, with 13 abstentions, and it can still be changed before a final vote.
A PSD lawmaker said companies that ignore the rules could face fines of up to 2-percent of global revenue.
