President Lai Ching-te has approved a special pardon exempting a woman in her 80s, who was convicted of killing her profoundly disabled son from serving any prison time.
Presidential Office spokeswoman Karen Kuo says Lai granted a pardon that exempts Lin Liu Lung-tzu from serving her sentence while acknowledging her conviction, after carefully reviewing the case and citing the enduring circumstances she faced.
According to Kuo, Lin Liu spent more than 50 years caring for her son.
She was diagnosed with COVID-19 in April of 2023, which caused her physical and mental health to deteriorate rapidly and felt she was unable to care for her severely disabled son.
Police say an investigation found that the woman covered her son's mouth and nose with tape, resulting in his death in May of 2023.
The Taipei District Court sentenced her to two years and six months in prison on January 16 of this year.
The Presidential Office spokeswoman says the case drew significant public attention and several legislators recommend the president consider a pardon.
