Mexico's President Claudia Sheinbaum says she will seek a diplomatic solution after U.S. President Donald Trump signed an order threatening tariffs on countries that supply oil to Cuba.
She says cutting shipments could trigger a humanitarian crisis on the island, affecting transport, hospitals, and access to food.
She says Mexico wants to avoid tariffs, and she has told her foreign minister to contact the U.S. Department of State to clarify the order.
Reports say the new US move puts Mexico in a tight spot because it is now one of Cuba's remaining oil suppliers.
Cuba's foreign minister Bruno Rodriguez has called the tariff threat an "international emergency."
