Taiwan black kite count reaches record 1,033

The Forestry and Nature Conservation Agency says the black kite population
rose to a record 1-thousand-33 last year.

The agency says surveys show steady growth over the past 13 years, after
decades of low numbers.

Researchers and volunteers carried out a nationwide dusk roost survey,
building Taiwan's largest raptor monitoring network.

The agency says black kites were recorded roosting again in Keelung's Shenao
and Rueibin areas for the first time since 1994.

It says sightings are also increasing along coasts, riversides, and around
Sun Moon Lake and Hushan Reservoir.

Officials link the rebound to better habitats and food sources, plus tighter
controls on toxic pesticides and rat poison.
