Taiwan, US tip leads to 1.3-tonne drug seizure near Dongsha

The Coast Guard says cooperation with the US Drug Enforcement Administration
led to a major drug seizure.

Officials say they boarded a Tanzania-registered freighter near the Dongsha
Islands in June and found 1.3 tonnes of ketamine and methamphetamine.

Authorities estimate the drugs were worth more than $2 billion NT.

Investigators say the crew claimed engine trouble, but were trying to dump
drug bags into the sea to destroy evidence.

The Coast Guard says it used warning flashbang grenades after several failed
boarding attempts.

Prosecutors have charged 2 Taiwanese officers and 9 Myanmar crew members
under anti-drug laws.

Officials say the seizure equals about 10-percent of all drugs seized in
Taiwan last year.
