Taipei Bans Bamboo Scaffolding in Major Construction Safety Crackdown

Taipei has banned bamboo and wooden scaffolding for all new construction and exterior wall renovations, requiring steel-pipe scaffolding, effective immediately.
The city is also tightening rules on protective netting and coverings, including flame-retardant or fire-resistant materials, with some requirements taking effect from March 1st.
The move follows a serious high-rise fire during exterior repair work in Hong Kong's Tai Po district ... which Taipei officials say was worsened by bamboo scaffolding and non-flame-retardant netting.
The new rules also require 30-centimeter spacing in tarps and netting setup and prohibit blocking emergency entrances or balconies, requiring each unit to keep at least one visible opening.
Officials say contractors and supervisors have legal responsibility for job-site safety, and agencies including the fire department will carry out inspections.
