Transport authorities say pedestrians will soon no longer be fined for stepping onto crosswalks when the lights flash green.
Under current rules, pedestrians can be penalized if they enter a crosswalk once the green walking signal begins flashing.
But the Ministry of Transportation and Communications says that rule will be relaxed, with changes expected to take effect as early as April.
Officials stress that a flashing green light is meant as a warning that the signal is about to end — not an instruction to hurry across.
Pedestrians are still advised to wait if the light is already flashing, but stepping onto the road will no longer result in a fine.
The ministry says the change is aimed at improving safety, especially for older people ... and reducing unnecessary penalties caused by unclear signal design.
