Taichung culls 1700 chickens over avian flu

Taichung city has culled over 1700 chickens at a chicken farm in Feng-yuan
following yesterday's discovery of Avian Flu there.

That number represents all the chickens at the farm where the virus was
detected.

Officials note that the egg-laying chickens have been disposed of in
accordance with regulations.

They add that avian flu symptoms began appearing at the farm two and a half
weeks ago, with nearly 2000 chickens dying since.

But during that period, egg sales continued with the farm's owner hiding the
information of unusual deaths of the birds.

Taichung city officials will impose a fine of up to $1 million NT under the
Act for the Prevention and Control of Infectious Animal Diseases.
