President Lai Ching-te says the international community should not let China set "red lines" that hurt regional stability.
Lai made the remarks Friday while meeting a delegation led by U.S. Senator Ruben Gallego at the Presidential Office in Taipei.
He says China has stepped up military activity around Taiwan, along with economic and diplomatic pressure across the region.
Lai says Taiwan will keep strengthening its self-defense capabilities and hopes other countries will not accept unilateral actions that threaten peace.
On trade ties, Lai called for quick progress on legislation to address double taxation between Taiwan and the United States.
Gallego says Taiwan's focus on self-defense supports wider cooperation, and he calls the tax issue a win-win.
