R&D alternative military service applications open Feb. 2

The Ministry of the Interior says it will start accepting applications for
R&D alternative military service on Feb. 2.

Men born between 1993 and 2004 and having at least a master's degree who
haven't yet fulfilled mandatory military service requirements can apply for
one of 2,600 spots in the R&D placement program.

The MOI said the program has placed 55,000 alternative service recruits at
more than 1,800 employers since the program began in 2008.

Most of the placements this year will be in semiconductor, machinery, IT and
electronics sectors. The employers include Academia Sinica and TSMC.

The MOI says that alternative military service recruits have been responsible
for more than 5,700 patents and publication of around 17,500 research papers
over the years.
