Flu cases prevalent even as common cold cases rise: CDC

Taiwan's Centers for Disease Control says it's carefully monitoring influenza, RSV and rhinovirus incidence ... as lower temperatures increase the likelihood of catching cold.
A CDC spokesman today noted that people in China are experiencing runny noses and congestion because of rhinovirus, or the common cold -- not influenza.
In Taiwan, he says the flu is currently the most common cause of seasonal symptoms ... despite increasing incidence of rhinovirus. The data show 44 percent of cases this season are influenza, followed by 16 percent adenovirus and 15 percent rhinovirus.
With the Lunar New Year travel season coming up soon, there is some concern about rhinovirus spreading in earnest to Taiwan ... The CDC says people shouldn't be overly concerned about rhinovirus, which is less dangerous than the flu.
People with infants who have caught a cold and have lingering symptoms should be alert to their breathing rate. More than 50 breaths per minute is a serious symptom that merits an emergency visit to the hospital.
