Taiwan association questions US guidelines on red meat, whole milk

If you're thinking about embracing the newest US dietary guidelines that emphasize the importance of meat and dairy, a Taiwan-based dietitians' group is urging caution.
A Taiwan Dietitian Association official says the guidelines are designed for Americans and reflect US conditions.
The comments come after the US this week released its 2025-2030 dietary guidelines, which reorganized food groups into an inverted pyramid, placing meat, dairy, and healthy fats alongside fruit and vegetables at the top. The guidelines also advised Americans to limit highly processed foods and added sugar.
Among the changes, the recommended daily protein intake was raised from about 0.8 grams per kilogram of body weight to 1.2-1.6 grams. The association official said the previous recommendation was based on a low-protein diet for people with kidney problems and that the updated range is better for the general population.
Taiwan's Health Promotion Administration prioritizes food sources in the following order: legumes, fish and seafood, eggs ... and then poultry or red meat.
