Taiwan has officially become a "super-aged society" as its senior population reached more than 20 percent of the total population last year.
New data from the Ministry of the Interior shows that as of December, there are more than 4.6 million people aged 65 or older in Taiwan.
That's out of Taiwan’s total population, now about 23.3 million.
According to the World Health Organization, a country is "super-aged" when one out of every five people is a senior citizen.
The data also shows that birth rates in Taiwan have dropped for the 10th year in a row, and marriage rates also saw a sharp decline, falling by about 18-thousand couples from the previous year.
