Beijing's 'cross-border pressure' shows Taiwan is not China

President Lai Ching-te says China's recent 'cross-border pressure' on Taiwanese officials proves Beijing's authority does not extend to Taiwan and underscores that the island is not part of the People's Republic of China.
Speaking Thursday, Lai cited the visit of China-born Japanese lawmaker Hei Seki, who is barred from China, as evidence that Taiwan and the PRC are not subordinate to each other.
His remarks came after China labeled Interior Minister Liu Shyh-fang, Education Minister Cheng Ying-yao, and a prosecutor as 'Taiwan independence' figures, banning them from entering China, Hong Kong, and Macau.
Lai praised those targeted, saying they can continue their work without fear of China's threats, and called China's military drills and political pressure 'not peaceful action'.
He has pledged to safeguard Taiwan and its citizens.
