Passenger Ships to Run Regular Drills for Power Bank Fires

Passenger ship crews in Taiwan must now practice fighting power bank fires every three months following several reports of lithium batteries smoking or catching fire on vessels.
The Maritime Port Bureau announced today that all 98 active passenger ships in Taiwan have completed their first specialized fire drills.
Officials say lithium battery fires are a unique risk, and crews are being trained to quickly suppress flames, then use large amounts of water to prevent the batteries from starting to burn again.
The bureau says ships are now required to carry specific emergency gear for such situations and companies that fail to conduct training could be banned from sailing if there is a safety risk.
The bureau is also asking passengers to use only certified power banks, avoid using damaged or swollen batteries, and leave their device in sight when in use.
