Defense officials say it was the closest ever Chinese live-fire exercise to Taiwan proper.
The rockets were fired in two batches using multiple rocket launchers from the Pingtan and Shishi areas in Fujian Province.
Seventeen missiles were fired from Pingtan fell into the sea off northern Taiwan in a China-designated drill zone, outside the 24-nautical-mile contiguous zone.
While 10 missiles launched from Shishi all landed in a designated drill zone southwest of Taiwan, within the 24-nautical-mile zone off Tainan.

Eight of those vessels briefly breached the 24 nautical-mile line but were promptly warned away.
