No Injuries Reported After Magnitude 6.1 Earthquake Shakes Taitung

Authorities say no injuries have been reported after a strong earthquake
struck Taitung late this afternoon.

According to the Central Weather Administration, the quake struck at around
5:47 PM and was centered 10.1 kilometers north of Taitung County Hall at a
depth of almost 12 kilometers.

Local media reports the quake sent residents rushing outdoors as buildings
shook.

Rail services remain suspended between Hualien and Taitung, as well as
Pingtung and Taitung, with bus replacement services in place while safety
inspections are carried out on tracks.

Minor damage has been reported, including cracked walls at Taitung Prison and
fallen ceiling panels at a local senior high school.
