Keelung's new metro system is set to begin construction this January, with a groundbreaking ceremony to take place in Qidu (七堵) District.
Keelung Mayor Hsieh Kuo-liang (謝國樑) says the first construction site will be near Baifu (百福) Station, where early work will focus on retaining walls and relocating vegetation.
The Mayor believes the project will create more local jobs, encouraging residents to work in Keelung rather than commuting to Taipei.
The first phase of the Keelung Metro, with an estimated budget of nearly 70 billion NT, will span more than 15 kilometers, linking Keelung's Badu (八堵) Station with Taipei's Nangang District, and passing through New Taipei's Xizhi area.
The line will include 13 stations, five of them in Keelung.
