New Taipei to Expand Mental Health Centers to Combat Depression

New Taipei is aiming to double its number of mental health centers to tackle a surge in depression.
Mayor Hou Yu-ih says the city will have 14 mental health centers running by 2030 ... with two new locations set to open next year in Banqiao and Sanchong.
The expansion comes as national data from 2019 shows nearly two million adults in Taiwan suffer from depression—a number the mayor warns is growing ... especially among young people.
He also pointed out that the depression rate for working-age adults had reached nearly twenty-five percent over a ten-year period ... from 2010 to 2020.
Hou says the goal is to make support easy to find in schools and workplaces, while breaking the stigma surrounding mental illness.
