KMT Passes Law Reversing 2018 Pension Reform
Posted on 2025-12-13 13:45:13
The opposition KMT has passed legislation raising pensions for retired civil
servants and public school teachers.

The amendments reverse a 2018 reform under former president Tsai Ing-wen
(蔡英文) that gradually reduced pension benefits over 10 years.

Under the new law, income replacement ratios return to 2023 levels, ranging
from 39 to 71.5 percent.

The measures passed with KMT support, while DPP lawmakers voted against them
and the Taiwan People's Party was absent.

The Cabinet says the changes will speed up the depletion of pension funds and
shift the burden to taxpayers.

Officials say the government will pursue legal and constitutional action to
protect the system's long-term sustainability.
