EU Freezes Russian Assets to Support Ukraine Defense
Posted on 2025-12-13 10:56:15
The European Union has agreed to indefinitely freeze Russian central bank
assets held in Europe.

The decision secures about 210 billion euros frozen since Russia's 2022
invasion of Ukraine.

EU officials say the move will help finance Ukraine's military and civilian
needs in 2026 and 2027.

The plan would use the frozen assets to back loans to Ukraine, repayable only
if Russia pays war damages.

EU leaders say this removes the risk of individual member states blocking the
asset freeze in future votes.

Russia's central bank has called the move illegal and says it is suing the
Belgium-based firm Euroclear.

EU leaders are set to finalize the loan plan at a summit later this month.
