Taiwanese Woman Indicted After Romance Scam Leads to Drug Smuggling

Authorities are reminding the public to be alert to overseas romance scams ... after a Taiwanese women was tricked into drug smuggling and indicted.
Officials say the woman met a man online who paid for her trip to Thailand.
Once she was there, the man instead asked her to bring back "gifts" to Taiwan for a reward.
Customs officers later found over 16 kilograms of cannabis buds—a Category-Two drug—hidden in her checked luggage.
Although the woman claims she did not know about the drugs, investigators say she was used as a courier by an international trafficking group in a romance scam.
She has since been transferred to the Taoyuan District Prosecutors' Office.
Police warn that transporting Category-Two drugs can carry life imprisonment or at least 10 years in prison.
