Yilan drilling confirms high-potential geothermal site

Academia Sinica says its first deep geothermal test well in Yilan's Yuanshan
Township has confirmed a high-potential site after temperatures of nearly 150
degrees were recorded at a depth of nearly 4,000 meters.

Academia Sinica and C-P-C began drilling the well in October of last year...
it completed drilling and analysis in August this year.

Initial findings is said to show an upwelling heat source beneath the
northern Yilan Plain.

Academia Sinica's Center for Sustainability Science says international
experience shows three to five test wells are usually needed to develop a
geothermal field

Taiwan has many hot springs and fumaroles... all considered to be signs of
potential sources of geothermal energy.

Experts believe Taiwan has a deep geothermal power generation potential of
between 25 and 32-gigawatts -- enough to provide a sizable amount of power.
