Fines for Taiwan shipbuilder mount over delayed submarine delivery

Shipbuilder CSBC Corp. has been accruing fines since last month after missing the contractual delivery deadline for Taiwan's first domestically built defense submarine.
Navy Chief of Staff Chiu Chun-rong said the total amoun will ultimately depend on the number of days that pass before C-S-B-C hands the submarine over to the Navy.
Defense Minister Wellington Koo has indicated that C-S-B-C will be fined about 190,000 N-T per day until the Narwhal is delivered.
Those fines will be deducted from the balance of payments for the vessel.
The Navy chief of staff said testing is currently at least two months behind schedule and the vessel is now undergoing fine-tuning and preparations for submergence trials.
However, he stressed that those submergence trials will only be scheduled once safety requirements are confirmed through review.
