US Congress revises National Defense Authorization Act

The US Congress has released a new draft of a bill allocating security funding to Taiwan.
The new version of the National Defense Authorization Act includes up to 1 billion USD in funding for Taiwan-related security cooperation next year.
This version removed earlier language that would have invited Taiwan to participate in the US-led Rim of the Pacific Exercise.
A press release from House Speaker Mike Johnson says that the NDAA "enhances US defense initiatives in the Indo-Pacfic to bolster Taiwan's defense and support Indo-Pacific allies."
The bill stipulates that up to one billion dollars can be used to support security cooperation with Taiwan and expand medical equipment, supply capacity, and "combat casualty-care capabilities" in 2026.
It also requires annual reports to Congress through 2029 regarding reciprocal procurement memoranda and authorizes planning for joint maritime operations and leadership training between both countries' coast guards.
