Former Aide to Malaysia's PM Charged With Bribery

Malaysia has charged a former senior aide to Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim
with accepting bribes.

Shamsul Iskandar Mohd Akin is accused of taking nearly 43-thousand US dollars
from a businessman seeking help with mining licenses.

He has pleaded not guilty and was released on bail.

Shamsul says he will fight what he calls an attack on him.

Prime Minister Anwar says authorities are free to investigate without
interference.

The case has renewed questions about Anwar's anti-corruption pledges.

The businessman accused of paying the bribes has also been charged and
pleaded not guilty.
