Taiwan's 1st stablecoin to launch in H2 2026 at earliest

Taiwan could see its first regulated local cryptocurrency as early as the
second half of next year.

Financial Supervisory Commission Chair Peng Jin-long says that's provided
legislation for a new 'stablecoin' moves smoothly.

He told lawmakers the proposed Virtual Assets Service Act should be placed on
the agenda this session and passed in the next.

The Cabinet is set to review the draft this week after three meetings Peng
says produced a high level of consensus.

The bill draws on European Union crypto-asset rules and doesn't explicitly
require stablecoins to be issued by financial institutions.

But for risk-management reasons, regulators and the central bank agree that
only financial institutions will be allowed to issue them at first.
