ADAS crashes prompt warning on dangers of hands-free driving

The Freeway Bureau is warning drivers they face fines of up to $36 thousand NT for taking their hands off the wheel, following several crashes involving cars with assisted-driving systems.
The bureau says features like lane-keeping, blind-spot detection and automatic braking are considered 'assistive' rather than 'autonomous' — meaning they do not replace the driver.
Officials say overreliance on these systems can be dangerous, especially during sudden lane changes, speed shifts, or in bad weather.
The warning cites a September 1st crash on Freeway 3, where a driver depending on ADAS failed to notice a slowed vehicle ahead.
