The K-M-T is slamming what it's describing as President Lai Ching-te's "astronomical" 1.25-trillion N-T defense proposal.
The opposition claims the proposal lacks detail, and could be part of a quid pro quo with U-S President Donald Trump to allow Lai to transit through the United States.
K-M-T lawmaker Hsu Yu-chen says the "astronomical sum" for the proposal could only be secured through debt financing, while the D-P-P has provided few details on how the money will be spent.
Hsu is also questioning whether Lai's commitment was made in exchange for Trump allowing him to make future stopovers.
KMT lawmaker Hsu Chiao-hsin says while her party is not opposed to increasing the defense budget due to the "deterioration in cross-strait relations under the D-P-P" - the proposed 1.25-trillion N-T will likely result in forced cuts to social welfare, education and other spending.
Hsu is also stressing that the U-S has yet to deliver several existing weapons orders to Taiwan.
The K-M-T's legislative caucus says it will closely scrutinize the budget proposal to ensure that taxpayer dollars are protected.
