Health Experts Warn of Widespread Calcium Deficiency in Taiwan

Health experts say most Taiwanese people are not getting enough calcium in their daily diets.
An official health survey from 2017 to 2020 shows that every age group except children aged one to three consumes only about half of the recommended daily intake.
They warned that without enough calcium, growing teens may never reach their peak bone strength.
And for older adults, it means a higher risk of weak bones and painful fractures.
They say low calcium can also trigger muscle cramps, numbness, and even irregular heartbeat.
The Ministry of Health and Welfare recommends 1 thousand 200 milligrams of calcium per day for teenagers, and one thousnad milligrams for adults, seniors, and pregnant women.
Foods like milk, yogurt, cheese, tofu, black sesame, dried small fish, and leafy greens offer good sources.
Experts add that sunlight, vitamin D, exercise, and limiting salt, caffeine, and alcohol can also help strengthen bone health.
