The opposition-majority Legislative Yuan has rejected all four nominees for the National Communications Commission proposed by the Executive Yuan.
Two of the nominees are professors of mass communications, while another two are scholars in information engineering and law.
Legislators began casting their ballots shortly after 11 a.m. today, and although all 50 DPP lawmakers present voted in favor of the nominees, their KMT and TPP counterparts, totalling 60, all cast ‘no’ votes.
In the end, none of the nominees successfully crossed the majority threshold of 57.
That means the NCC will go on with just three commission members, unable to make any decisions on policies regarding Internet management, changes in relevant laws and dozens of broadcasters' license renewals.
The Executive Yuan and DPP lawmakers have all expressed deep regret over the result, saying the opposition camp should not prevent the NCC from carrying out its normal operations.
