Doctors in Taiwan are warning that having both diabetes and obesity can double the risk of death for patients.
According to the Ministry of Health and Welfare, more than two and a half million people in Taiwan have diabetes, and about 80 percent are also overweight or obese.
Doctors call the condition 'diabesity', which puts extreme pressure on the body's organs, increasing the likelihood of heart and kidney disease.
Medical experts say that excess body fat reduces the body's ability to produce insulin, worsening diabetes and creating a triple threat to the heart, kidneys, and metabolism.
The Diabetes Association of the Republic of China says ... says fewer than 30 percent of patients manage their weight effectively.
To address this, the Association launched a program across over 120 medical institutions late last year, focusing on helping patients control blood sugar, lose weight, and protect vital organs.
So far, that program has helped nearly 900 patients lose a collective total of over 3 thousand 700 kilograms.
