Taiwan Flu Wave Easing But Severe Cases Still Pose Risk

Taiwan's flu epidemic appears to be in the rear-view mirror — but health officials warn the road ahead could still be bumpy.
They say that while infection numbers are falling, the risk of severe complications remains high.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, flu-related clinic visits totaled nearly 107 thousand last week — down almost five percent from the week before — suggesting the outbreak is tapering off.
But 63 new severe cases and nine deaths were reported during the same period, including a three-year-old girl with a pre-existing condition who developed breathing difficulties after two days of high fever.
Officials say around 4.8 million people have received free flu shots so far this season, but fewer than two million doses remain unused.
And with another wave expected in late December, the CDC is urging the public to get vaccinated as soon as possible.
