KMT seeking to change typhoon holiday calling authority

The K-M-T is calling for the authority to announce the suspension of work and
classes during typhoons to be reverted back to the Central Weather
Administration.

Typhoon days used to be determined by the central government, but local
governments currently decide whether to cancel work or school during severe
weather.

K-M-T lawmaker Hung Meng-kai said such decisions should rely on professional
assessments on weather, rather than political pressure on local officials.

However, weather administration director-general Lu Kuo-chen says decisions
on typhoon closures are not only based on wind and rainfall forecasts, but
also take into consideration living conditions, water, electricity and
environment ...

... and as such he believes the authority to announce the suspension of work
and classes should be handled by local governments.
