Food Waste
The Central Emergency Response Center announced today that the source of a recent African Swine Fever outbreak in Taichung likely originated from improperly sterilized food waste used for feed.
The Center released its epidemiological investigation report, which concludes that the case at the pig farm in Taichung’s Wuqi District is a single, isolated incident with no signs of wider spread.
Officials say epidemiological analysis ruled out other sources of infection, such as people, vehicles, or outside pigs.
Instead, the virus is believed to have entered the farm through food waste that was not properly cooked before being fed to the pigs.
Since the outbreak was reported on October 22nd, the Center has inspected and tested related farms, rendering plants, markets, and slaughterhouses nationwide.
The investigation found no other infected cases and no positive results in environmental samples outside of the initial case site.
