In Tainan, a railway project has uncovered roads dating back to the 19th century, made partly with sugar!
The city’s Cultural Heritage Administration says the remains were found near Sin-Lau Hospital.
Archaeologists believe the roads were built around 1836 during the Qing Dynasty, using mixed mud and broken ceramics, and even sugar, as filler.
They say the site likely matches the old “Bullock Cart Road,” once part of Tainan’s bustling sugar-making district.
The discovery offers a sweet glimpse into the city’s history as a major sugar hub.
The administration said the archaeological team working on the site has completed documenting the location and temporarily relocated the artifacts and ruins to allow for the project to move the railway underground.
