Lawmakers pass amendments to raise fines for driving without a license
Posted on 2025-10-29 08:15:14
Lawmakers have passed amendments to the Road Traffic Management and Penalty
Act that raise fines for driving a motor vehicle or riding a motorcycle
without a valid license.

Under the amendments, unlicensed motorcyclists face a fine of up 36,000 N-T,
while unlicensed car drivers face a fine of up to 60,000 N-T.

Police will also be required to impound the vehicles on the spot.

The previous fines for driving a motor vehicle or riding a motorcycle without
a valid license were between 6,000 and 24,000 N-T.

According to National Police Agency, there were 55,492 cases of unlicensed
driving in 2023, resulting in 763 deaths and 78,885 injuries.

Lawmakers across party lines agreed that increasing fines for unlicensed car
and motorcycle driving is necessary to enhance deterrence.
