Southeast Asian foreign ministers have started talks ahead of a landmark ASEAN summit that will welcome East Timor as the bloc's 11th member.
The summit, which begins tomorrow in Kuala Lumpur, will also mark U.S. President Donald Trump's first trip to Asia since returning to the White House. It will be followed by two days of high-level engagements with key partners -- including China and the US.
The summit is expected to focus on regional security, economic recovery and maritime disputes -- with U.S. tariffs and trade relations high on the agenda.
Trump won't be meeting Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kuala Lumpur. Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said Thursday that Chinese Premier Li Qiang will be attending the summit in Xi's stead.
Officials say Trump is expected to witness new U.S. trade deals and preside over the signing of an expanded ceasefire deal between Thailand and Cambodia following recent border clashes.
