The United States and the United Nations have slapped sanctions on the former head of Haitian presidential security and the leader of a Haitian gang.
The pair were called out for their roles in criminal gang activities that have destabilized Haiti.
The U.S. Treasury Department and the U.N. Security Council made announcements on the sanctions within hours of each other.
Former police officer Dimitri Herard was implicated in the assassination of former President Jovneel Moise in 2021. Since escaping prison he has allegedly colluded with the powerful gang coalition Viv Ansanm.
