President Lai Ching-te has pledged to strengthen Taiwan's air defenses by developing a new "T-Dome" system, designed to form a comprehensive safety net against growing military threats from China.
In his National Day address today, Lai said the system will feature multi-layered defense, high-level detection, and effective interception, integrating AI and advanced technologies to build a "smart defense combat system".
He reaffirmed Taiwan's goal to raise defense spending to 3 percent of GDP next year and 5 percent by 2030, emphasizing that "peace is won through strength".
While details remain undisclosed, a Reuters report says the T-Dome—modeled after Israel's Iron Dome—will defend against missiles, rockets, drones, and aircraft, with initial integration expected to begin soon.
