Taiwan Sees 21 Straight Months of Population Decline

The Ministry of the Interior says Taiwan's total population has now declined for 21 consecutive months, reflecting ongoing demographic challenges.
According to the ministry, as of the end of September, Taiwan's population stood at 23.317 million, down by about 87 thousand people from a year earlier—an average decrease of 239 people per day.
There were a little over 8 thousand 600 babies born in September, with roughly one baby born every five minutes, but that number remains far below the more than 15 thousand deaths recorded the same month.
The number of people aged 65 and older has reached 4.62 million, making up 19.8 percent of the total population — just shy of the 20 percent threshold that would classify Taiwan as a "super-aged society".
