The Mainland Affairs Council says a total of 132 Taiwanese had their freedom of movement restricted in China from between January 1 2024 and September 30 this year ....
... but more than 70-per cent of those cases are linked to fraud.
Council spokesman Liang Wen-chieh, 93 of the individuals were involved in fraud cases, 13 engaged in religious activities, one was designated a national security case and there were 25 miscellaneous incidents.
Liang says over 61 Taiwanese "went missing" in China and 19 were held for questioning over the same period, which brings the total number of cases involving loss of contact, questioning or restrictions on freedom of movement to 212.
The statement comes after a previous Mainland Affairs Council post on Facebook showed that from January 1 of 2024 to the end of August this year there had been 188 such cases.
Data says that Taiwanese made 2.304-million trips to China from January to October 2024, for business, study and tourism.
