Magnitude 5 earthquake rocks Taiwan's west coast
Posted on 2025-09-20 14:10:13
No damage or injuries are being reported after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake
struck off Taiwan's west coast just before seven this morning.

Seismologists say the quake occurred within the Eurasian Plate, an area that
rarely experiences seismic activity, and they are not expecting significant
aftershocks.

According to the Central Weather Administration, the epicenter was located in
the Taiwan Strait, about 94 kilometers east of Kinmen County Hall, at a depth
of 17 kilometers.

The strongest intensity readings were level 2 on Taiwan’s seven-tier scale
in Kinmen, Penghu, Changhua, Yunlin, and Chiayi.

Smaller tremors, registering level 1, were felt in Matsu, Taoyuan, Hsinchu,
Miaoli, Nantou, Taichung, and Tainan.
