No damage or injuries are being reported after a magnitude 5.0 earthquake struck off Taiwan's west coast just before seven this morning.
Seismologists say the quake occurred within the Eurasian Plate, an area that rarely experiences seismic activity, and they are not expecting significant aftershocks.
According to the Central Weather Administration, the epicenter was located in the Taiwan Strait, about 94 kilometers east of Kinmen County Hall, at a depth of 17 kilometers.
The strongest intensity readings were level 2 on Taiwan’s seven-tier scale in Kinmen, Penghu, Changhua, Yunlin, and Chiayi.
Smaller tremors, registering level 1, were felt in Matsu, Taoyuan, Hsinchu, Miaoli, Nantou, Taichung, and Tainan.
