Imported Fruit and Cakes Siezed at Border Over Safety Violations

The Food and Drug Administration has seized shipments of Japanese muskmelons and Philippine cakes after tests found excessive pesticide and preservative levels.
A 240-kilogram batch of muskmelons from Hokkaido contained a regulated insecticide above the legal limit and was returned or destroyed.
Future shipments from the same importer will undergo 100 percent border inspection.
Meanwhile, 538 kilograms of butterscotch cakes from the Philippines exceeded limits of the preservative sorbic acid.
In response, the importer's future shipments will now face enhanced random checks at a rate of up to 50 percent.
Other noncompliant imports flagged in the TFDA's latest report include mandarins from Australia, radishes from China, broccoli from South Korea, and frozen sea urchin roe from Chile.
All non-compliant produce has either been returned or destroyed.
