Consumers' Foundation Urges Calm Over Heavy Metals in Goji Berries

The Consumers' Foundation is urging the public not to panic over recent tests that found heavy metals in dried goji berries.
The group says heavy metals like cadmium, lead, arsenic, and mercury are naturally present in soil and water, making zero detection in Chinese medicinal herbs or crops nearly impossible.
It stresses the key issue is whether levels exceed legal safety standards.
The Foundation explains that plants absorb trace elements from their environment, meaning a background level of heavy metals is natural and not necessarily harmful.
International bodies—such as the W-H-O—have set maximum allowable limits, and as long as products test below these thresholds, health risks remain very low.
The statement comes after Consumer Protection Association Taiwan recently reported heavy metal residues in goji berries from 30 different suppliers.
