Taitung city residents are protesting the removal of two Chiang Kai Shek statues in the city, leading to the National Property Administration delaying their planned removal.
The NPA says, it will collect public opinion before deciding on a path forward, and the Taitung City Mayor says, he's willing to take on the task.
Local officials posted notices on the two statues, which reside on public land, stating that they were considered symbols of authoritarianism and therefore would be removed.
The first of these was scheduled to be removed yesterday, and the other is scheduled for Saturday.
Those against the removal of the two statues say that they hold memories for many residents, and says the decision to remove them is "shocking."
They state that history should be preserved rather than erased.
NPA officials say, they will consider public opinion before moving forward.
