AIT's Taiwan Status Comments Consistent with Long-Held U.S. Stance

Two former American Institute in Taiwan officials say recent AIT remarks on Taiwan’s status reflect Washington’s long-standing position.
Richard Bush and Robert Wang told CNA over the weekend that the U-S does not view World War II-era documents as determining Taiwan’s future, which must instead be resolved peacefully with the support of the Taiwanese people.
Their comments follow Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi’s claim that the Cairo and Potsdam Declarations justify Beijing’s sovereignty over Taiwan.
An AIT spokesperson rejected that view, saying Beijing misuses history to support coercive tactics.
Foreign Minister Lin Chia-lung also rebuked China’s stance, stressing that the San Francisco Peace Treaty did not cede Taiwan to the PRC...
.... and that the Republic of China remains the "sole legitimate government" administering Taiwan.
